Medtronic founded the Bakken Research Center (BRC) in Maastricht in 1987, starting with 45 employees, as a research facility. Especially clinical study activities have grown substantially, now ranging from small exploratory studies with one physician-investigator and just a few patients to multinational, randomized trials intended to demonstrate superior clinical and economical outcomes with new device therapies in hundreds, sometimes thousands of patients. The BRC nowadays also hosts the Benelux Therapy & Procedure Training Center, where advanced simulator training is offered to physicians, nurses and technicians. About 300 employees work at the Bakken Research Center.

Medtronic Eindhoven Design Center (MEDC) is a global research and development center of the Medtronic Neuromodulation business, located on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. Founded in 2011 as a spin-out of Royal Philips and previously known as Sapiens Steering Brain Stimulation, it is part of Medtronic since August 2014.
The 50 employees are driven to address unmet needs in neuromodulation therapies with innovative solutions. MEDC leverages its unique capabilities in high-definition neural interfaces, advanced therapy guidance algorithms, and intuitive user interface design to realize integrated customer-centric solutions.
The MEDC initial ambition — as a crucial R&D asset within the global Neuromodulation business of Medtronic — is to improve the therapeutic efficacy of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS, a pacemaker for the brain), to shorten and simplify the clinical procedure, and to improve patient comfort. For this purpose, MEDC developed a unique high-accuracy DBS system consisting of an advanced, MRI-conditionally safe DBS lead with 40 stimulation points and an integrated, image-based solution for planning and programming of an optimal DBS treatment.
The team is focused to bring this innovative DBS concept to more patients who can benefit from this advanced treatment for degenerative or functional brain disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, epilepsy and other currently emerging indications.
