History
Medtronic has had one or more facilities in Limburg since 1969. In that year, the founder and former CEO of Medtronic, Earl Bakken, chose Kerkrade as the city for Europe's first facility and base for Medtronic's activities.
Today, Medtronic is still well represented in the Netherlands.

Heerlen hosts the Dutch sales organization. It is also Europe's Information Technology and Financial Services center. Moreover, the European Operations Center in Heerlen is Medtronic's largest (30,000 m2) and most integrated distribution facility in the world. Every day, tens of thousands of medical products and parts are distributed from Heerlen to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Asia, Canada and Latin America. About 800 people work at Medtronic in Heerlen; this turns Medtronic into one of the largest employers in this region.

Bakken Research Center (BRC) in Maastricht
Bakken Research Center in Maastricht
Medtronic founded the Bakken Research Center (BRC) in Maastricht in 1987, starting with 45 employees, as a research facility. Especially clinical study activities have grown substantially, now ranging from small exploratory studies with one physician-investigator and just a few patients to multinational, randomized trials intended to demonstrate superior clinical and economical outcomes with new device therapies in hundreds, sometimes thousands of patients. The BRC nowadays also hosts the Benelux Therapy & Procedure Training Center, where advanced simulator training is offered to physicians, nurses and technicians. About 220 employees work at the Bakken Research Center.

CardioVascular Operations in Kerkrade
This site hosts the European production facility of perfusion systems. Except for single products for heart valve and bypass surgery, such as oxygenators, reservoirs and tubing sets, also complete systems and customized solutions (custom packs) are manufactured here. In addition, CardioVascular Operations provides heart valves, products for minimally invasive heart surgery, surgical ablation systems, cannulas, autotransfusion equipment and temporary leads for cardiac pacing to customers all over Europe. About 110 employees work at CardioVascular Operations.
