Artificial Cervical Discs*
An artificial disc is a dynamic prosthetic device inserted between the vertebrae to replace a natural spinal disc. It is designed to preserve mobility throughout the treated vertebral segment.
This procedure offers a minimally invasive procedure for stabilizing vertebral compression fractures in the spine. These can be caused by e.g. osteoporosis or cancer. The procedure utilizes balloons designed to restore the vertebral body height. Subsequently, bone cement is inserted into the vertebral body to stabilize the fracture and to form an internal cast that holds the vertebral body in place.
Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery*
Minimally invasive spine surgery is performed through smaller incisions than traditional open surgery, and this may lead to decreased muscle trauma1. Minimally invasive surgery can be percutaneous (through the skin) or mini-open (operating through a small incision). These technologies can be used to treat different kinds of spinal areas.
Spinal Fixation Systems*
Spinal fixation systems include screws, rods, and connectors. They are used for spinal fusion in patients with different types of conditions. A spinal fusion is simply the uniting of two bony segments, whether a fracture or a vertebral joint. The instrumentation acts as an “internal cast” to stabilize the vertebra until the fusion, or bony re-growth, can occur.
Together with Wyeth Farmaceuticals, Medtronic offers a surgically implantable medicine as part of our biologics platform. This medicine has been developed to initiate bone growth in a specific, targeted area.
